Why Are My Instagram Messages Purple?
By Kushagra Kumar, founder of Shre. Updated 1 July 2026.
If you opened Instagram and noticed your chats now glow with a purple and blue gradient, you are not alone. A lot of people see the new color and worry that something changed with their account, or that a message is stuck. In almost every case the answer is simple and harmless.
The purple look is a chat theme that Instagram applies to Direct. It is a visual style, not a sign of a problem, a hack, or a special kind of message. Below we explain what the color means, why it showed up, and how to switch to a different theme if purple is not your taste.
Purple Instagram messages are just a chat theme. Instagram rolled out a purple and blue gradient as a default look for Direct. It is a design choice, not an error, and you can change the theme in your chat settings.
What the purple color actually means
Instagram Direct lets you style a conversation with a theme, which changes the background and the color of your sent message bubbles. Over time Instagram has shipped several default looks, and a purple to blue gradient has been one of them. When you see purple bubbles, you are seeing this gradient theme applied to that chat.
It is worth being clear about what the color does not mean. It does not mean the other person blocked you, that your message failed, or that you are on a different type of account. It is purely cosmetic. The same message would look identical to the person you are talking to unless they also have the theme applied on their side.
Why did my chats suddenly turn purple?
Instagram updates its design in stages, so a new default theme can appear for some people before others. You might see it after an app update, or it may simply switch on for your account while a friend still sees the older blue look. Steps and colors vary by app version and region, so what you see may differ slightly from a screenshot online.
- A recent app update introduced or expanded the gradient theme.
- Instagram is testing the look with a portion of users at a time.
- You or the other person set a purple theme on the chat earlier and forgot.
If only one conversation is purple and the rest are not, someone in that chat most likely chose the theme manually. If every chat is purple, it is almost certainly the current default.
How to change your Instagram chat theme
You can usually pick a different color or revert to a plain look from inside the conversation. Exact wording changes between versions, so if a label does not match, look for the closest equivalent.
- Open the chat you want to restyle.
- Tap the name or profile photo at the top to open chat details or settings.
- Look for Theme and tap it.
- Choose a color, gradient, or the default option, then confirm.
Changing the theme affects only that conversation, and in many versions it changes the look for both people in the chat. If you want a neutral inbox, pick the default or a solid color rather than a bright gradient.
Still want the purple look on purpose?
Plenty of people actually like the gradient and want to keep or recreate it. If yours reverted to blue and you miss the purple, you can set it back from the same Theme menu. We put together a short walkthrough on getting the color you want, including the classic purple gradient, in how to make your Instagram DM purple.
If the color is the least of your worries and messages themselves are acting up, that is a different issue. See Instagram DMs not working for fixes when chats will not load or send.
A note for creators and businesses
Themes are fun, but if you run a page that gets a lot of DMs, what matters more is answering people quickly. Instagram lets businesses automate replies so no message sits unread, no matter what color the bubble is. Tools like Shre AutoDM send a message automatically when someone comments a keyword on your post or Reel, using the official Instagram API and without logging into your account. Frequently asked questions
Are purple Instagram messages a glitch?
No. The purple gradient is a chat theme, not a bug. It is a design choice from Instagram and does not affect whether your messages send or are read.
Does purple mean the message was not delivered?
No. Delivery status is shown by labels like Sent, Delivered, or Seen, not by the color of the bubble. A purple bubble sends and delivers the same as any other.
Can I turn off the purple theme?
Yes. Open the chat, tap the name at the top, find Theme, and choose the default or another color. Steps may vary slightly by app version.
Why is only one of my chats purple?
If a single conversation is purple, someone in that chat most likely set the theme manually. You can change it back from the Theme menu in that chat.
