How to Comment on Instagram
By Kushagra Kumar, founder of Shre. Updated 1 July 2026.
Comments are how conversations happen on Instagram. Whether you are replying to a friend, joining a discussion under a creator you follow, or answering people who comment on your own posts, knowing the ins and outs of comments makes the app a lot easier to use.
This guide covers how to comment, reply, like, pin, and manage comments, plus what busy creators do when a single post brings in hundreds of them at once.
To comment on Instagram, open a post or Reel, tap the speech bubble icon, type your comment, and tap Post or the send arrow. You can reply to a comment by tapping Reply beneath it, and like a comment with the small heart to its right.
How to comment on a post or Reel
Adding a comment takes a few taps and works much the same on posts and Reels.
- Open the post or Reel you want to comment on.
- Tap the speech bubble (comment) icon below the media.
- Type your message in the text box. You can add emoji and, in most versions, mention other accounts with an @ symbol.
- Tap Post or the send arrow to publish it.
Your comment appears under the post right away. If you change your mind, press and hold or swipe on your comment and choose delete, depending on your app version.
How to reply to a comment
Replies keep a conversation grouped together instead of scattered across the thread.
- Find the comment you want to answer.
- Tap Reply underneath it.
- Instagram usually adds the person's username automatically. Type the rest of your reply.
- Tap Post or the send arrow.
Replies are nested under the original comment. On a busy post you may need to tap View replies to expand them.
Like, pin, and manage comments
Instagram gives you simple tools to organize the comments on your own posts and to react without typing.
- Like a comment: tap the small heart to the right of it.
- Pin a comment: swipe on the comment or open its menu and choose Pin, which keeps your favorite comments at the top. Most accounts can pin a few at a time.
- Delete or report: use the same swipe or menu to remove a comment or flag it.
- Reply privately: in some versions you can reply to a comment with a direct message.
If comments on a specific post are stressing you out, you can limit or turn them off for that post from its menu, or filter offensive words in Settings.
When comments are not showing up
Sometimes a comment you posted seems to vanish, or a whole section looks empty. This is often a temporary loading issue, a filter, or a connection problem rather than anything you did wrong. Our guide on Instagram comments not showing walks through the common causes and fixes.
How creators handle a flood of comments
A post that takes off can bring in more comments than any one person can answer by hand. Creators and businesses handle this in a few ways: they pin the most useful comments, reply to a representative few, and automate the rest.
A common tactic is the comment-to-DM move. You invite people to comment a specific word, and every commenter automatically gets a direct message with a link, code, or answer. Shre does exactly this on the official Instagram API, so you can turn a busy comment section into conversations without watching it all day. See comment to DM for how it works, or Instagram auto reply for automatic public and private replies.
Frequently asked questions
How do I comment on an Instagram post?
Open the post, tap the speech bubble icon, type your comment, and tap Post or the send arrow. Your comment appears under the post immediately.
Can I edit a comment on Instagram?
Instagram generally does not let you edit a posted comment. The usual approach is to delete it and post a new one. Steps to delete may vary by app version.
How do I pin a comment on my post?
Swipe on the comment or open its menu and choose Pin. Pinned comments stay near the top. Most accounts can pin a small number at once.
Why can others comment but I cannot?
The account may have limited or turned off comments for that post, restricted who can comment, or filtered certain words. A poor connection can also block posting.
